Voices of Goa, India

In Equality, first we differentiated equality vs. equity. The difference being, equality is treating everyone the same no mater what stance in life they originate from, but equity focuses on giving everyone what they need to reach their full potential. We have discussed many topics such as The Unequal Opportunity Race, and how affirmative action exists to battle the obstacles of inequalities, such as discrimination, people face because of their racial identity. Alongside this we pin pointed on these aspects of identity and researched the different waves of feminism and women's history, African-American history, and writings and speeches of historical figures on living in a country fresh out of slavery and bent on white supremacy. Our main text in this unit was The Case of Reparations, written by Ta Nehisi Coates, an author and journalist who writes on cultural, social, and political issues. He went into depth on personal stories with connections of concrete evidence on why black people should get reparations for what they have gone through, and continue to experience today. It talked about the racism in housing, and how that contributed to segregating neighborhoods, as well as many more policies, situations, standpoints, and people's voices that gave the argument of reparations. Besides that, the project I am presenting today is related to marginalized voices in the form of a textbook excerpt. Some states have different textbook interpretations of history that still have underlying racism or don't even acknowledge other identities who were also significant in that time. I did this for Goa, India because I found out India did fight for its independence from Britain's rule, but specifically Goa was still in the grasp of colonization. I also know a family who has been impacted by this event, and I included their experiences.
